On the Big Screen Lately

It is no secret that I am one of the biggest film nerds out there. Do you know how people create playlists for songs? I create playlists for films- day-long marathons of must-watch visual stories. Here are some great things to put on your watch list:

  1. Us: a feast for the eyes, and if you’re like me you will enjoy analyzing the hell out of each cinematic element. Peele has quickly become one of my favorite directors. Between the awesome dad jokes and Nyongo’s stellar lead performance, this is one you won’t want to miss. And when you’re ready— let me know so we can nerd out about it.

  2. The Unafraid: There are many people who have formed opinions on the lives of immigrants, refugees, and asylum seekers, but few truly take the time to empathize with those who are going through different experiences. This documentary follows DACA students from Georgia navigating their higher education journey in a state that is trying to deny their very existence.

  3. Pretty in Pink: A re-watch, but surely my favorite Hughes movie. Duckie is constantly my style icon and hardcore crush. A manifesto on all things coming of age.

  4. Period: It is crazy to think that a big thing imposing as a barrier to many people, is the laws, taxes, and stigmas that surround something biologically impossible to control— periods! This documentary explores these issues in a community in India and will leave you with the passion you need to make a difference in gender disparity.

  5. Roger and Me: After watching his documentary Fahrenheit 11/9, I have been following his witty commentary wherever he leaves it. I recently had to watch this particular one in a class— and it was everything I expected of him and more: the humor and the ability to use cut and dry story-telling to expose real-world issues.

Happy Watching!
