Film at the Moment

Here are to movies that will make you question everything you knew about love. The way it tastes. What it sounds like. How it feels on bare, naked skin. Grab a tissue, some friends, and get ready to have your heart broken (in a good way).

  1. Love and Community: Moonlight- Probably one of my favorite movies to date. Impeccably written, with a cast that wins you over immediately. A story about love, queerness, drug abuse, all in the backdrop of the Black community and particularly in Black boy/manhood. Did I mention that the cinematography is perfect?

  2. Love and Sacrifice: The Killings of A Sacred Deer- What do you when a decision you have made in the past, comes back to haunt you and threatens to take away everything you love? The ending of this movie will leave you speechless, and through it all, you might even be surprised with who you end up siding with (or may be I’m an anomaly lol).

  3. Love and Risk: American Honey- A traveling film across the Midwest that explores youth, risk tasking, breaking laws, and partying troubles away. Oh, also you might come out of this movie with the fattest crush on Sasha Lane.

  4. Love and Youth: Flower- A quirky film with the greatest sense of humor, runaway journey, and an unapologetic female lead exploring her sexuality and agency at her fullest. A perfect summer coming-of-age film, that’s completely unpredictable.

  5. Love and Identity: The Miseducation of Cameron Post- A film that tackles the conversation that not enough people (society) are having: gay conversion camps/therapy. The concepts are uncomfortable (which is needed), but through it all, unlikely friendships, perseverance, and love outshine the ignorance of those who tell you that loving who you want is wrong.

  6. Love and Poverty: The Florida Project- Watching this from an economic and poverty standpoint is extremely eye-opening and intriguing, but what is also equally pulling is how rich a child can feel, even when their reality says the opposite. It is a lovely film about the sacrifices of a mother and the relationship between her and her daughter. Warm, compassionate, and endless sunshine, this film is a must-see.

  7. Love and Abuse: A Star Is Born (1936)- Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper won over hearts with their adaptation, but in my eyes, the original version is what made me realize how beautifully complicated love can be, especially when dreams and alcohol are in the mix. It is the original love and other drugs. If you love classic Hollywood films, this should be added to your list immediately.

  8. Love and Abandonment: 400 Blows- A 1959 French feature film, a cinematic masterful recreation of the director’s childhood. Aloof parents, petty crime, boyhood, aggressive teachers. You might find yourself relating in the most unimaginable of ways.

Happy watching!
