Spring Reading List
Spring cleaning? None of that. Here's a spring reading list, guaranteed to make you feel good (or at least feel something). Reading outside in the sunshine is highly encouraged, but the kombucha and bluebs are optional:
The Secret History by Donna Tartt: in this novel you follow a group of eccentric students at a 1980's liberal arts college in Vermont (who all study ancient greek), under the influence of a professor who starts classes with "I hope we’re all ready to leave the phenomenal world and enter into the sublime.” It's a thriller for those of us who love to think. There’s murder, weird friendships, and lots of reflection.
A Portrait of an Artist as a Young Man by James Joyce: an oblique self-portrait of Joyce himself. At the center of this novel lie a hero's quest to create his own character, his own life, language, and art. I get to re-read this for class and I am so excited.
The Education of an Idealist by Samantha Power: a former ambassador of the US to the UN, writes a memoir highlighting her journey from a war correspondent during the Bosnian genocide to working with Obama in the White House while dancing on the line between diplomat and activist. P.S we're pen pals
The Strength in our Scars by Bianca Sparacino: making it a 2020 goal to read a poetry collection every month, and March is no exception thanks to this gift.
Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier: wouldn't be an authentic reading list without at least one classic right? a gothic psychological proto-feminist piece + there's a movie adaptation!
The Encyclopedia of Doris by Cindy Crabb: stories, essays, and interviews from different editions of the internationally distributed zine, Doris.
happy reading!
